Purpose of a Charger

• Visual Elegance: Chargers enhance the overall aesthetic of a table setting, serving as a stylish backdrop for the dinnerware placed on top.
• Layering Foundation: They provide a base for the succession of dishes during a meal (salad plate, soup bowl, entrée plate), especially in multiple-course dining.
• Functional Role:
• Helps catch spills or crumbs, keeping the tablecloth or placemat cleaner.
• Maintains heat in the dinnerware by insulating it from the table surface.

Typical Features

• Size: Usually 12–14 inches in diameter, larger than a standard dinner plate.
• Materials: Can be made of metal, acrylic, glass, porcelain, or even rattan, depending on the theme or formality.
• Design: Often features ornamental edges, metallic finishes, or textures to complement fine china.

When to Use

• Formal Dining: Banquets, weddings, holiday meals, or upscale dinner parties.
• Special Occasions: Used to elevate any tablescape when presentation matters.

Etiquette Note

Chargers are typically removed before the main course is served, although this can vary based on regional or service style. They're not meant to be eaten off directly.
